14 kilometers made by feet. Misha comes back in the morning and he even seems to be sober. He is not too happy when we tell him that we our going by ourselves and don’t need a guide or horses, however, he says it would be okay if we give him 100 rubles.

We don’t give him any, yet it’s still okay. We leave our bikes at the center and head out. Right after the Kucherla village the path begins going up sharply. Our backpacks are about thirty kilograms heavy and, of course, this is now when the sun appears. In three hours we get over the first mountain pass, totally wet. We have to walk through the dirty cedar forest mostly. At 6 PM we stop by the Ak-Kem River and in two more hours we also find a place for our tent. Belukha doesn’t show so far.
