Lankavi Island is famous for its legends, the most popular of which is the legend of the princess Mahsuri who was accused in cheating her husband and condemned to death. White blood spilled from the scars of the punished princess, which was the sign of her innocence; however, it was too late to turn the tragic events back.

Before dying the princess damned the island and its inhabitants in seven generations, and really, for few hundred years they lived in poverty, were often robbed by the pirates and neighboring Thai and suffered from natural disasters. Only when the last representatives of the seventh generation died, the island turned back to life. This is when the government of the island decided to develop here one of the first tourism centers in Malaysia. In 1987 it proclaimed itself a tax-free zone. The asphalted roads, electricity, water main, airport and ferry terminal were built here.

We rent mopeds and take a ride around the island. In the West there is an option to lift up to Marcingang, the highest mountain of the island. Because of the usual mist in these places, it’s barely possible to see anything around, though. However, we find a nice waterfall with the water cool and sheer and take a swim there. We really have to watch out of the monkeys who steal just everything that isn’t tied and drag it to the jungle. We almost lost our bag with all the passports and credit cards by just leaving it next to the bike. What saved our documents was the thing that the bag was bigger than the monkey itself; however, he still managed to drag it thirty meters away.
