We plan to visit the embassy of Indonesia today because we need visas. At the embassy door there is a totally discouraging picture: huge crowd waiting for the door to open, many of these people obviously are hanging around here since yesterday.
The police are trying to calm the crowd down at the most vulnerable point: the entry; they even make people to kneel down. There are only few white people except us who look at this scene all confused. Then we find out that mostly these people are Indonesians trying to get work permission in Malaysia which is a goal different from ours, and a policeman catches us and lets us in. The clerk in charge for our documents review is willing to see also our return tickets from Indonesia. We explain that this is impossible because we are not returning but going further and taking ferry to Australia. Then she is willing to see our ferry tickets. We explain that this is impossible because we have no idea when are we going to get there. After a short discussion among clerks our documents are accepted on the condition that we show our recommendation from the ministry of foreign affairs in Latvia and ATA carnet when we receive visas. It’s the day after tomorrow. We, however, would like to receive them tomorrow since we have to hurry: the only ferry from Georgetown to Medan is leaving on Thursdays. Until Thursday we still have to get to Singapore. Nobody cares about it though. Okay, we’ll figure something out. We are still hesitating at the door for few in hope to meet some clerk who would help us with our problem like it was in Vientiane. Though it was useless, we still hope our coordinator to call the consulate in Stockholm; probably someone there would help us. Waiting for tomorrow.
